Objectives & Goals

• Streamline configuration pushes through bluetooth
• Create an experience that’s easy enough for average users that don’t know how to code.

Discover

Outlining the project's objectives, goals, and requirements.

Define / Ideate

Focus on research and gaining insights to inform the design process. Understanding the users, market, and existing solutions. Generating and refining ideas

Design

Turning the selected ideas into detailed designs and prototypes.

Test

Creating controlled environments for our users to engage with the end product and help patch any loose ends.

Business Challenges

Seeing that Arista has never had an app before, the process of it's creation had and still has a lot of hurdles to consider and think through
  • Documentation: Creating clear and comprehensive documentation and tutorials that are accessible to non-technical users.
  • Support Requirements: Providing adequate customer support for users who may not be technically savvy can require significant resources.
  • Error Handling: Ensuring the app can guide users through common errors and issues they may encounter during setup.
  • Security: Implementing robust security measures to protect user data and prevent unauthorized access to the network.
  • Connectivity Issues: Handling various connectivity issues that may arise during the setup process, such as Wi-Fi instability or incorrect configurations.
  • Value Proposition: Clearly communicating the app’s value proposition to convince users that it is worth the investment.
  • Legal Considerations: Addressing any legal considerations related to networking and data transmission.

User Research

This is first for Arista and generally for the market. So as such our research and observations were based on customer frustrations, Sales Engineers expertise, and set-up patterns for applications used by bluetooth devices.

Quantitative Observations

Due to the NDA nature and security over this project, my team and I had high limitations on outside conversations and research. Which most of our research was based on customers who signed an NDA agreement. The first version of this project was solely a minor release for first time customers based on their needs for phase one of our major overall release phase.

Bluetooth Security Worry

Many of the Sales Engineers (SEs) and customers expressed concerns about the security of Bluetooth connectivity. They were particularly worried that unauthorized individuals might be able to connect to an unconfigured switch at various setup locations.

Troubleshooting

The target demographic for this app includes basic technology users, such as average managers at a cafe. Given this, minor troubleshooting complications are likely to arise. Many customers, especially those without an IT support team at their disposal, have expressed concerns about this.

Continuous Device Access

IT users who monitor and manage CloudVision don't require the on-site user to have all the device details. However, they find it very useful for the on-site user to have a visual reference for the devices through the app on their phone.

Features & Functionalities

The needs of our users for phase one seemed clear and simple. An app that needed simplicity, security and troubleshooting. With each of these set in our minds we started to create a mind-map of all the "parts" it took to combine it into a full concept.

Competitor Analysis

Due to company policy, our research was limited in scope, and we couldn't explicitly state who or what "inspired us" or which existing similar products directly influenced our design decisions. Without naming anything or anyone directly, I will discuss general concepts derived from products that function similarly to our end goal.

Device setup and management

Many Bluetooth setup and management applications differ significantly from switch devices. However, basic functionalities such as health, activity, power, inventory, and error alerts are fortunately similar to what we needed to incorporate in our approach.
